“This internship lends itself as an opportunity to give a helping hand while at the same time gaining knowledge about architecture in the real world. This internship bridges the gap between design and construction, and in doing so allows students to problem solve not at their desk however on an actual site. The qualifications of past education will help close the gap between classroom and occupation….Through this internship I will be able to witness the cycle of architecture, which comes full circle when the architectural concept breathes life through the construction and inhabitation of the structure.”

- Charles E. Mouton

“I also believe that we are not only there to build structures that will make their surroundings more aesthetic and pleasing to the eye but that we care about what they are going through and want to help in ways the program can not. We each have areas that are unique to others that can help and areas in which have the capacity to grow and improve by working along side people that have unique and different qualities than the ones we possess.”

- Silvanna M. Membreno

“Committed to further reorganizing and developing the AOC campus, I hereby swear to thoroughly love and cherish every part of this summer internship, including, but not limited to, the following: waking up at the crack of dawn, physical labor (even if it means breaking a fingernail), intense heat (and sunburns!), the smell of cheap cigarettes, minor paper cuts, dehydration, sweaty and stinky clothes, plus many, many more. Oh yeah, I’ve also had my shots.”

- Beverly Istre

“Helping poor people rebuild their lives is everybody’s responsibility…I believe that anything we give the poor, no matter how small or insignificant to us, means a great deal to them. That is why I am willing to give my time and experience to help this cause.”

“Previously, I worked on the Maison des Cultures project in Acadian Village; the feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment that I got from working only a few hours was enough to make me want to do more in the community. I believe architecture is an inherent part of the public realm: it is viewed, activated, criticized by the people in our community. To see things from a different perspective, to design something for one purpose and have it be used to other ends, to be told by people that what I have helped to create is amazing or flawed-…”

- Ashley M. Braquet

“The shelter is a great opportunity to gain hands on building experience. I enjoy completing projects, it’s a good feeling to see something you helped design be built. A result driven process is one of the things that keeps the Outreach Center growing and keeps me motivated…The Outreach Center is a good cause, it is nice to be a part of that. Also, going to other businesses the center interacts with is always very interesting. To see how the other businesses function behind the scenes and how things get done helps me in design have more of an idea of what hey are capable of.”

- Lee Degeyter

The summer internship at the Acadiana Outreach Center was a great experience. There is nothing as fulfilling or rewarding as helping those in need. I am truly proud of having taken part in the transformation of the Acadiana Outreach Center. ..... I really enjoyed the summer...it was alot of work but alot of fun too.
