In the Fall of 2005, Hector LaSala was contacted by the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Lafayette. The facility is located in a depressed area, known as “Fightin’ Town” because it used to be an area on the outskirts of town where people would go to fight. After a design charette, with the children and staff, a master plan was developed (shown above) by our students. In an important initial move, clients, staff and students planted over 60 jasmine plants that will eventually cover-up a surrounding chainlink fence with barbed wire. The plan calls for
1. Entry canopy 2. Bleachers 3. Tensile canopy over basketball court 4. Two Four-Square courts 5. Mural |
6. Monkey bars 7. Grandparent’s seating area 8. Swing sets 9. Community garden 10. Stepping stones |
|
During the Spring of 2006, the mural will be created by the First year design students and the Building Institute
students will begin the bleachers. We expect our sustained engagement to last approximately two
years. |
